Cupra electric cars

Tier 2ES

A design-driven, performance-focused marque spun off from SEAT, sold in Australia by Volkswagen Group Australia with both plug-in hybrid and battery-electric models.

Cupra originated as 'Cup Racing', SEAT's motorsport-derived performance badge first used on the 1996 Ibiza GTI 2.0 16V Cupra Sport (celebrating SEAT's 1996 World Rally Cup victory), before being spun off as a standalone Volkswagen Group marque in January 2018. Cupra launched in Australia in July 2022 (Leon, Ateca, Formentor) under Volkswagen Group Australia Pty Ltd, trading as CUPRA Australia.

Cupra entered the Australian market in July 2022 with the Leon hatch, Ateca SUV and Formentor crossover, including e-Hybrid plug-in variants across the Leon and Formentor ranges — a first for a mainstream Volkswagen Group brand in Australia. Its first fully electric model, the Born performance hatch (82kWh gross/77kWh usable battery on the MEB platform, ~511km WLTP range), followed in early 2023; the Tavascan electric mid-size SUV has since joined the range.
