MG electric cars

Tier 1CN

A British sports-car marque reborn under Chinese ownership as Australia's value leader in affordable EVs and PHEVs.

MG began in 1924 in Oxford, England as Morris Garages, building sports cars that defined its heritage. After the collapse of MG Rover, the marque passed to China's Nanjing Automobile in 2005 and then to SAIC Motor, which took full control in 2007. SAIC relaunched MG as a value-focused mainstream brand, and it is now the largest single-brand car exporter from China.

MG has pushed aggressively into affordable electrification, undercutting rivals on price across both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models. Its Australian EV story began with the ZS EV around 2021, followed by the MG4 hatch, and it now spans small SUVs, hatches, a PHEV SUV, an electric roadster and the premium IM sub-brand. Long warranties and low pricing are central to its local strategy.

value/budget mainstream EV & PHEV

Battery-electric: MG4 hatch, ZS EV small SUV, the newer S5 EV, the Cyberster electric roadster, and the premium IM5/IM6. Plug-in hybrid: the HS Plus EV, marketed as one of Australia's most affordable PHEVs. (MG's ZS Hybrid+ and MG3 Hybrid+ are conventional non-plug-in hybrids and are not BEV/PHEV.)
