Volkswagen electric cars

Tier 1DE

Germany's largest carmaker and a long-standing mainstream brand in Australia, entering the local EV market in 2025 with the ID.4 and ID.5 electric SUVs on the group's dedicated MEB platform.

Volkswagen was founded in 1937 in Wolfsburg, Germany. Volkswagen Australia Ltd was formed in 1957, taking over the Martin & King assembly plant at Clayton, Victoria that had built the Beetle locally since 1954; the modern importer, Volkswagen Group Australia (VGA), was established as a national sales company in 2001 and merged with Audi Australia on 1 January 2022.

Volkswagen announced a global EV push in 2017 (targeting 30-plus EV models by 2025) and revealed the ID.3 in September 2019 as the start of a 'new era'. Its Australian EV launch was repeatedly delayed — originally slated for Q2 2024, then Q4 2024 — before the ID.4 and ID.5 finally launched via VGA in March 2025, offered in Pro (rear-wheel-drive, 82kWh gross/77kWh net battery, 175kW DC) and high-performance GTX (all-wheel-drive, 84kWh gross/79kWh net) grades on the MEB platform.

mainstream

ID.4 and ID.5 mid-size electric SUVs (Pro and GTX grades) are Volkswagen's first battery-electric models sold in Australia, alongside the brand's long-standing petrol and diesel passenger and commercial range.
